Allen ISD Kindergarten helpful links

Starting kindergarten is a big milestone for both kids and parents! Preparing ahead of time helps children feel confident, independent, and excited for this new chapter. Below, we’ve put together a simple timeline with tips to guide you through the months leading up to kindergarten and make the transition smoother for your family.

Books to help facilitate the transition to school

Books give kids a safe way to explore new experiences, build confidence, and feel ready for what’s ahead. A few reccomendations to read over summer and discuss with your child are below:

A Few Months before school
  • Work on opening lunch containers, zipping jackets, and using the bathroom independently.

  • Try the morning routine, walk or drive by the school, and talk about what to expect.

Two Weeks Before School
  • Be sure your child has a backpack large enough to carry a lunch bag, snack, jacket, water bottle and full-sized folder.

  • Check your campus website for a list of needed school supplies.

One Week Before School
  • Practice going to bed and waking up on their school schedule to get used to early wake times.

  • Practice their school route. Show them the drop-off and pick-up areas at the bus stop. Discuss landmarks so they know which stop is theirs.

The Day before school starts
  • Organize their backpack and pick out clothes if that will help your morning run more smoothly.

  • Try to get a good night of sleep. (This one is for parents too!)
